The Miami Digital Literacy Project

The Miami Digital Literacy Project (under Project DIGIT, INC.) aims to provide an accessible solution to the lack of digital literacy among  today's youth. In a technologically oriented society, it's important to know how to use the technological tools at hand to become active and informed members of society. MDLP familiarizes high school students and middle school students with online responsibility, and educates  them on the importance of digital literacy. Additionally, MDLP organizes presentations for adults, focusing on specific interests.

The American Library Association defines digital literacy as "the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.” In today's world, this definition is constantly evolving. What was technologically relevant yesterday, will be outdated tomorrow. Essentially, an adequate digital literacy education is a moving target - making it that much more necessary. 

Digital literacy has become an essential skill in today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, and the COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated its importance. For students, possessing digital literacy skills has enabled them to navigate virtual learning environments, access educational resources, and engage in collaborative activities seamlessly during the pandemic's disruptions. As they prepare to enter the workforce, digital literacy will be a crucial asset, allowing them to communicate effectively, problem-solve, and thrive in technology-driven environments. Similarly, adults have faced the urgency of acquiring digital literacy to adapt to remote work, online operations, and accessing digital services. Beyond professional contexts, digital literacy empowers individuals to engage in online communities, access information, and participate responsibly in digital spaces. As technology continues to shape our daily lives, digital literacy has become a fundamental skill for learning, working, and thriving, enabling both students and adults to adapt and succeed in an increasingly digitized world.
