"Working to make digital accessibility equitable through digital literacy education."
The Miami Digital Literacy Project is committed to closing the digital literacy gap across all ages in today’s technology‑driven society. MDLP equips middle and high school students with the skills and responsibility needed to navigate the internet safely and effectively, and it also provides robust support for adults and senior citizens. Many adults face barriers to accessing essential online services, and older adults are often excluded from rapidly evolving digital platforms. Through workshops, one-on-one instruction, and interest-based learning, MDLP helps adults and seniors build confidence, independence, and digital fluency. By meeting learners where they are, we ensure that every member of our community can participate fully and safely in the modern digital world.
DEFINING DIGITAL LITERACY
The American Library Association defines digital literacy as “the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.” In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, this definition is constantly expanding. Tools, platforms, and expectations shift so quickly that what is relevant today may be obsolete tomorrow. As a result, achieving true digital literacy is a moving target—making comprehensive, ongoing digital education not just valuable, but essential.
IMPORTANCE OF DIGITAL LITERACY
Digital literacy has become an essential skill in today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, and the COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated its importance. For students, possessing digital literacy skills has enabled them to navigate virtual learning environments, access educational resources, and engage in collaborative activities seamlessly during the pandemic's disruptions. As they prepare to enter the workforce, digital literacy will be a crucial asset, allowing them to communicate effectively, problem-solve, and thrive in technology-driven environments. Similarly, adults have faced the urgency of acquiring digital literacy to adapt to remote work, online operations, and accessing digital services. Beyond professional contexts, digital literacy empowers individuals to engage in online communities, access information, and participate responsibly in digital spaces. As technology continues to shape our daily lives, digital literacy has become a fundamental skill for learning, working, and thriving, enabling both students and adults to adapt and succeed in an increasingly digitized world.
